The Origin
The Chihuahua is descended from the Techichi, a small companion dog kept by the Toltec civilization in Mexico as early as 900 CE — though some evidence suggests the breed dates back even further. They were sacred to the Aztecs and believed to guide the spirits of the deceased through the underworld.
Named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua where they were rediscovered in the 1800s, the breed was registered with the AKC in 1904. They have spent every year since demanding the respect their history commands.
The Personality
Chihuahuas are perhaps the most misunderstood dogs in existence. Often called aggressive, they are simply operating with the confidence of a dog who does not believe their size is a relevant data point. They are devoted, fearless, and deeply bonded to exactly one person.
That one person becomes their entire world. Everyone else is on probation. The Chihuahua does not offer unconditional acceptance — it offers unconditional devotion to the chosen few, and a raised eyebrow to everyone else.
