Breed Story
“Developed in 1899 by Captain Max von Stephanitz, the German Shepherd was engineered to be the world's perfect working dog — and it hasn't stopped overachieving since.”
The Origin
In the late 1800s, German cavalry officer Max von Stephanitz attended a dog show and spotted a wolf-like dog with incredible intelligence. He bought him on the spot and founded the breed that would become the most versatile working dog in history.
Originally bred to herd and protect sheep across Germany's rugged terrain, the German Shepherd quickly proved useful in World War I as a military and messenger dog. Their reputation for fearless loyalty under pressure was cemented in combat.
The Personality
German Shepherds are not a dog for the passive owner. They are high-energy, intensely loyal, and deeply bonded to their people. They need work — mental and physical — or they will create their own work, usually involving your furniture.
That grumpy, alert expression you know and love? That's not bad mood — that's constant vigilance. Your German Shepherd is always watching, always assessing, always three steps ahead of whatever threat might be approaching your coffee table.
