The Origin
The Golden Retriever was developed in the 1860s by Dudley Marjoribanks, the first Lord Tweedmouth, on his Guisachan estate in the Scottish Highlands. Breeding a yellow Flat-Coated Retriever with a Tweed Water Spaniel, he created a dog with a perfect soft mouth for retrieving waterfowl and an unmatched eagerness to please.
By the early 20th century, Goldens had reached North America where their cheerful disposition and trainability made them stars. They became guide dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, and — most importantly — the internet's most beloved subject matter.
The Personality
Golden Retrievers are the dog that makes other dog owners question their choices. Perpetually happy, endlessly patient, and genuinely delighted by absolutely everything — a walk, a ball, a plastic bag, a slightly different smell on a different patch of grass.
