Breed Story
“Descended from Roman drover dogs that marched with legions across Europe — the Rottweiler has been the working dog of choice for those who need absolute reliability for 2,000 years.”
The Origin
The Rottweiler's ancestors were Roman Mastiff-type dogs used to herd cattle and guard camps as the legions marched through the Alps into what is now southern Germany. In the town of Rottweil, these dogs were refined over centuries into the breed we know today — the “Rottweiler Metzgerhund” or butcher's dog.
Butchers used them to herd livestock to market and guard their money purses tied around the dog's neck. The breed nearly went extinct in the early 1900s before being revived for police work — where they immediately excelled.
The Personality
Rottweilers are deeply loyal to their family and deeply skeptical of everyone else — and they will decide which category you fall into at their own pace, on their own terms. They are calm under pressure, observant, and not interested in your opinion until they've formed their own.
Behind closed doors, the Rottweiler is a goofy, devoted, and deeply affectionate dog who thinks they are a lap dog despite weighing 130 pounds. The stern exterior is for everyone else. The leaning against your legs at 3 AM is for you.
